What is gum contouring?

Gum contouring is a form of cosmetic dentistry. It is a procedure that is usually offered to a patients who do not like the way their gum-line looks, or patients that are suffering from gum disease. The procedure changes the shape of the gum-line by either cutting away excess gum or restoring the gum.

You may be more familiar with other names for gum contouring, such as gingival sculpting or gingivoplasty.

Gum contouring is carried out under local anaesthetic.

Gum Contouring for cosmetic purposes

Gum contouring can be used to change the look of your smile by changing the gumline. The procedure is carried out to make gums look neater and more in proportion to your teeth.

Gum contouring for periodontal disease

Gum contouring can also be used when a patient has suffered gum disease.

Periodontal disease causes bone loss and gum recession. Gum contouring is used in periodontal treatment to restore the gum that has been lost through gum recession. A periodontal specialist, known as a periodontist, will take tissue from another part of your mouth and use this to change the look and structure of the gum line. With periodontal patients, although this treatment can be used for cosmetic purposes, it is usually carried out as part of the treatment process to restore damaged gum.

Claiming compensation

As with all forms of dental treatment, gum contouring procedures do not always go smoothly. Substandard dentistry can leave patients unhappy with the look of their gums following their treatment or suffering a greater degree of pain and sensitivity than should be expected
