Jaw Surgery, also known as Orthognathic surgery, is surgery carried out to change the profile of your face or correct your bite (occlusion).
In terms of correcting bite, the surgery changes the position of the jaw, so that the upper and lower jaw fit together. An overbite is the gap between the top and bottom front teeth, where the top teeth stick out over the bottom teeth. An underbite is whether the lower teeth sit further forward than the upper teeth.
Most occlusal issues can be treated with braces. However, severe cases require jaw surgery.
As with any surgery, there are recognised medical risks, such as:
- Long lasting numbness
- Infection
- The jaw moving back to the original position
- Speech changes
Although jaw surgery is usually carried out successfully with few issues arising, problems are not uncommon and our team has dealt with a number job jaw surgery negligence cases.
However, the most common type of claim is where there has been a delay or a total failure to refer the patient for surgical treatment in the first place. In these instances the patient suffers harm by continuing with orthodontic treatment that is unable to provide the cosmetic or functional results that surgery would give them. It can also lead to teeth being removed unnecessarily and prolonged orthodontic treatment causing root resorption and tooth loss.
We operate a free case assessment service and deals with claims on a No Win, No Fee basis.
